Imbolc Ceremony: Sacred Waters of Winter

​On Imbolc we celebrate the watershed at the top of our Rocky Mountain Valley.
We gather as Women, Men, Children and Valley Family to make offerings, sing, make ablutions, scry in the waters, give thanks and re-commit to preserving our Holy Springs and Watershed. We send up voices for more snow which means more melting spring streams and rivers and thus,  a summer of lush green, food for all of the Relations and no drought. We send up voices to the Summer People and Nature Kin who will not join us until Late May or Early June. We celebrate the activism which, in our ongoing personal and communal commitment assists in preserving our mighty watershed. We are Northern mountain people. We hope that our marmot/groundhog friends will awaken only briefly, to see at least 3 more months of healing snow.

As the Waters flow, so the health of our valley and our lives will flow. We honor the Irish and Scottish and Northern European traditions of Brigid's Feast and the Shining Forth Celebration of Candlemas--or the Midwinter revelation of Renewed Light. As the Celts identified--Brigid is also the Weaver of Destiny. She is the Creatirix of the healing threads of eternal Change and the Mother of all movement and transformation. As She goes forth in the world, her merciful, watery springs awaken. Her many faces and qualities include the Norse Mothers of the Thread of Fate, the Norns; Kock y'ang W'uuti, or the Navajo GrandMother Spider who is the Mistress of the Past as it weaves into the Present and thus, on into the Future ; and Brigid or Bride, the Celtic Mother and Weaver of Healing, Poetry, Smith-craft and Fate.

As we celebrate Her influences and blessings, we choose to wear Brigid's symbol, the color blue. This is an ancient and sacred color which honors the warrior's body-painting in the herbal blue of Woad. We are spiritual warriors, protectors and devotees of the great Water Source. Blue also represents the Sacred Feminine, the clear blue sky, the mountain bluebird of spring and the blue of the rushing mountain waters.

 On Imbolc we celebrate the Source and the Living Waters of our mountains and our lives!
